Today Web Design Ledger posted a fantastic article about designing SEO (search engine optimization) friendly websites that details what you should plan for in the initial design and planning stages of the website itself. It highlights Keyword Research, Search Engine Friendly Navigation, Website Load Times, Website Images, Keyword Placement, Social Media, Friendly URLs, Sitemaps, Google Fonts, and 301 Redirects. A lot of the article wasn't "new" to me but it did solidify my own findings and practices when it comes to SEO.
For anyone starting out (students especially) this is a great read to get a firm understanding of the basics. The biggest thing to remember about SEO is that it isn't rocket science - it's not hard to do at all - it just takes time and effort to do it correctly and effectively and knowing the basics will do more for you or your clients site than 75% of their competition who haven't done a single thing.
