Today I came across the most magnificant desktop tools for my Macbook - Geektools and subsequently Geeklets. Using Geektools and Geeklets I've got a full calendar, the date and time, local weather and system information for my laptop all on the desktop for easy access (see above screenshot).
There are TON of Geeklets created by Geektools users that are available for download - everything from the weather to Gmail notifications to iTunes information to the Major League Baseball standings (someone wanna make me an NHL version for next season?).
I'm glad that people have spent the time to create such a cool application and plugins for it. Thank you.
