As a web developer and graphic designer there was nothing worse than asking a client to send along photos that they want to use on a project and then receiving a .doc file that they've pasted all of their photos into. Pulling photos from the .doc file and keeping the quality was a pain in the ass and incredibly time consuming but luckily Microsoft switched to Open XML for their new file system .docx.
So how do you get those images out of your pesky .docx file? It's surprisingly super simple. First, change the file extension of your .docx file to .zip and then unpack/unzip your new .zip file. What you get as a result is a directory containing, amongst other things, a directory called media. Within that directory you have every image embedded in the original .docx file saved with the highest resolution possible.
